Run Report – 3 July 2023

The Bude Beast is a walking/running event organised by Cornwall & Devon Long Distance Walkers Association with options of a 6, 24 or 30 mile route.

Anna Gocher and Louise Webb took part in the longest distance which follows footpaths through farmland, wooded valleys, the Bude canal and coast. And with 5,700 feet of ascent, it has a few hills as well.

It was a blustery day, but the sun stayed out and Anna and Louise both completed in a fantastic time of 8 hours and 20 minutes.

Much, much further afield Sally Shoolbraid headed to the Orkney Islands for the St Magnus Marathon. Here the weather there was quite horrendous with lashing rain and driving rain, but Sally persevered and completed the 26.2 mile route in a great time of 4:59:02.

Dartmoor Rescue Group are part of Mountain Rescue England and Wales, and they had an inaugural 12-hour event on the moor, raising funds for their charity, from Okehampton Army Camp. This consisted of 12km laps, following the army tracks and trails up past West Mill Tor and High Willhays and then heading back via the tracks near to Oke Tor and Rowtor.

Starting at 6pm the idea was to run either solo, or as part of a team, through the night for as many laps as possible before the 6am finish. It was a perfect night for running as there was very little wind, and the almost new moon was up for several hours bathing the moor in light.

Rob White, in a team of 3, completed 8 laps before the time ran out.
